Section XXII:

The sisters Martha and Kate converse about the confrontation between Trescott and Mr. Winter. Kate explains how Winter holds Trescott responsible for everything including his daughter’s condition.  Martha does not believe Winter. She says, “It don't seem as if Sadie Winter had been sick since that time Henry Johnson got loose. She's been to school almost the whole time since then, hasn't she?” Martha then sides with Trescott to which her sister replies, “Martha, you can't go against the whole town.”  “‘The whole town,'" cried Martha. "I'd like to know what you call 'the whole town.' Do you call these silly people who are scared of Henry Johnson 'the whole town'?”  Kate also informs Martha that the Trescott neighbors are moving away on account of Henry.

In this section, the mob mentality is finally breeched by one woman, Martha. She begins to see everything from Trescott’s point of view, from a rational point of view. She claims that she would not be afraid of Henry on account of his appearance. Martha realizes that there is more to a person than a normal or scary face.
